The Beginning of The Whipkey Company
Hi, my name is Kwin Whipkey, the founder of The Whipkey Company.
I’m a husband and father of two incredible kids who constantly remind me what truly matters in life. My faith and my family are the foundation behind everything I pursue, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to build something meaningful while leading them well.
For most of my life, creativity has been a constant thread.
Since my teenage years I’ve explored different forms of artistic expression — songwriting, guitar, choir, dance, and creative writing. Those interests eventually led me to pursue a degree in worship leadership at a small Christian university. Over time my curiosity kept expanding.
In 2014 I discovered photography through Instagram, which opened the door to graphic design, visual storytelling, and social media work. By 2019 I was experimenting with music videos, short films, and learning the basics of cinematography, script writing, and editing.
Each pursuit taught me something about craft, patience, and the process of creating something meaningful.
But none of them quite felt like the craft that would stay.
Discovering Leathercraft
Leathercraft was never part of the plan.
I first encountered it while photographing products for another leather craftsman. His shop was dusty, cluttered, and full of character — the kind of space where you could immediately tell things were made slowly and by hand.
Watching him work planted a simple idea in my mind that I couldn’t shake:
I want to try making my own wallet.
My first attempts were beginner stitch-kit cardholders from a hobby store. They were simple projects, but they left me wanting more. Something about working with leather felt different from anything I had tried before.
In September of 2025, I decided to buy a few tools and attempt a no-stitch origami wallet design.
The moment I made the first cut into that piece of leather, something clicked.
Leather demands patience.
It rewards precision.
And every piece carries the marks of the person who made it.
That first cut turned into many more.
Why I Started The Whipkey Company
Today I continue refining my style within the craft of handcrafted leather goods, experimenting with different wallet designs, tools, and techniques while learning something new with every build.
The Whipkey Company exists to create simple, durable leather wallets and goods meant to age alongside the people who carry them.
Leather is one of the few materials that improves with time. Scratches, bends, and wear slowly become part of the character of the piece — a record of years spent in someone’s pocket or bag.
In that way, a wallet becomes more than just something you carry.
It becomes something that carries your story.
